Back in March I wrote about my goal for 2011: improve. I am happy to report that I’ve reached my goal for this year! Last month (I know, I’ve neglected this storyline) I ran Madison Marathon and improved my half marathon time by three minutes. I am proud of the performance because I had been injured and unable to run for about 18 days during the last two months leading up to the race. I had even told myself that I wouldn’t go for that goal in my first race of the season. I had another race scheduled the following week and I figured it would take two races to get my legs back and in the fall I’d increase my speed work to go for the goal.
Well on race day I couldn’t find my race watch. In 5 years of running I have never competed without a watch – talk about feeling naked. But I went out fast and felt great the whole way. I knew I was doing well around mile 9 when I found the pace team for a 1:40 finish time. They were a little off but I knew I was running well.
The last 1.5 miles were tough to hang on. My feet were getting sore and the uphill climb up East Washington killed me. Still I came around that Capital Square strong and proud when I crossed the line.
So what’s next?
I’m not quite sure. Katie and I have discussed adding strength training and speed work to our workouts. I’m not sure if we’ll register for a race this fall but it’s the best way for me to go after a goal.
